The experience
With your private guide and driver, start in Lima’s UNESCO-listed Historic Center and descend into the catacombs of San Francisco. Lunch overlooking the Pacific, then spend the afternoon in bohemian Barranco: the Sáenz Peña promenade, the clifftop boardwalk, the Bridge of Sighs and colorful murals, with a snack along the way.
Tip: bring a light jacket in the cooler months.
Step by step
We pick you up in Miraflores, San Isidro or Barranco and drive down to the historic centre, a Unesco World Heritage site.
Inaugurated on 27 July 1921, for the centenary of independence. Mariano Benlliure's monument shows San Martín crossing the Andes, ringed by white façades.
The pedestrian street linking the two squares. It was Lima's elegant promenade — wooden balconies, old mansions and shopfronts that are still the downtown's commercial heart.
Founded in 1535, as old as the city itself. Its baroque doorway is carved in stone, and inside there is almost always a line of limeños waiting to pray to Friar Pedro Urraca.
Lima was founded here on 18 January 1535. Around it stand the Government Palace, the Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace; at its centre, the fountain inaugurated in 1651, the oldest thing still standing in the square.
Lima's best-preserved baroque complex: a Mudéjar wooden dome, cedar choir stalls carved in 1658 and a library of 25,000 volumes. Below the floor, the catacombs that served as the city's cemetery until 1810.
Lunch in Miraflores, booked in advance. We always ask for a table with a sea view and our first choice is Mangos, at Larcomar; if there is no availability that day, we pick another restaurant of the same standard nearby. Let us know in advance about any dietary restrictions.
Barranco's tree-lined avenue, with the republican mansions Lima's upper class built here when the district was their summer seaside resort.
We walk along the edge of the cliff, the sea below and the boardwalk gardens alongside. It is the best spot of the day for photographs.
A 44-metre wooden bridge, opened on 14 February 1876, suspended eight and a half metres above the Bajada de los Baños. It was where lovers met — hence the name — and Chabuca Granda dedicated her waltz to it in 1960.
We finish among the murals of Barranco's streets and the main square, with the Municipal Library and La Ermita church. This is where we stop for a snack before heading back.
We drop you off at your hotel door in Miraflores, San Isidro or Barranco.
